New Zine: I don’t know what I want to do with my life

I’ve been a bit quiet lately because I’ve been working on my newest zine, and it’s finally finished!

It’s called, I don’t know what I want to do with my life. It follows the story of a chicken-person that doesn’t know what it wants to do with it’s life.

I’ll have these at the MCA Zine fair on the 26th of May!

You Deserve to DIY

I’ll be part of an exhibition called “You Deserve to DIY” at the Substation in Newport which was organised in conjunction with the ever-awesome Sticky Institute.

On the 23rd of March from 1-3PM, I’ll also be doing a zine/comic/manga workshop about visual storytelling - Book Here! Topics covered will be how you can structure a narrative, finding inspired from your surroundings and then putting all that together and making your own little zine! If you’ve ever thought about making your own zine, comic, or manga, this might be a good little introduction.

Zines go west! Sticky Institute invited 10 zinesters to
lock down for a 24hr Zine making camp at The Substation. This exhibition, in the Community Access Gallery, displays the results of their challenge and will give you the chance to make your own Zine.

Exhibition opening: Thursday 28 February, 6-8pm
Exhibition dates: 28 February – 24 March

Voice

I was very lucky to be at the Oxford Literary Festival on one Saturday. Phillip Pullman, Patience Agbabi, Kate Clanchy and James Hawes was talking about voice. Not just literary voice and written voice, but voice as an enduring string within a writer’s work.

A voice is a literary act.

Try to find the voice by hearing the rhythm for the sentence first. In this sense dialogue is easier to write than narrative. We assume that the narrator is somehow objective, and that they are able to go equally into the mind of a male, and then a female. In this sense the narrator is like a sprite, which flits in between characters, the scene. Or, mechanically a camera, that is sometimes fixed, sometimes not.

As the reader, you are allowed to go into some characters’ minds, but not others.

Agbabi, a poet, stated that she reads out her text. Clanchy does not. Pullman does, but not audibly – he reckoned that the words need to go into the mouth, to hear the rhythm.

The idea of the ‘story arc’ was not spoken of before the advent of cinema.

The Space Invaders exhibition that ran at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra is travelling to QLD! My zine will probably be part of the show at UQ Gallery! The exhibition runs from 9 April – 5 June 2011.

Wonder if it will come down to Melbourne…
